WWE will hold a tournament to determine the new Women’s Tag Team Champions. Sasha Banks and Naomi were stripped of the titles and suspended indefinitely after walking out of the company during an episode of Monday Night Raw. Michael Cole announced the tournament on last week’s SmackDown.

WWE has a very slim roster of women’s tag teams. There have been rumors that they might call some teams up from NXT to fill out the bracket. As of now, there are only two established women’s tag teams on the main roster.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the possiblities for the tournament. Several pitches have been made, but nothing is finalized. Dave believes it may only feature four teams.

“OK, so here’s the situation with the tag team title. They’re going to do a tournament. There are pitches that have been made, and that’s where we’re at right now. So, there’s not a final thing. I know of different ideas. It does feel like it’ll probably be four teams.

Nikki and Doudrop probably one of them. Shayna and Natalya probably the favorites, because they’re probably the best of the four teams, what they have. And as far as the other two teams, there’s several different options, but essentially it would be putting Carmella and Zelina back together even though they’ve broken up or just having two people who have never teamed before and two teams of just, people put together, whatever it is and however it is. But, yeah, nothing is finalized right now.”

Fans will have to stay tuned to see how WWE addresses their lack of depth while also having a tournament. With just a couple of existing teams on the main roster, WWE may have to get creative. We will have to wait and see exactly how things come to pass.
