Hit Row had an incredible amount of potential to be a major force in WWE. The stable consisted of Isaiah “Swerve” Scott (Swerve Strickland), Ashante “Thee” Adonis, AJ “Top Dolla” Francis, and B-Fab. Just when they thought the group was on the brink of breaking through, WWE unceremoniously released all of them.
The departure of Hit Row from WWE caught a lot of people by surprise. The faction had just been called up to SmackDown. They were barely able to do anything before all of them were fired.
A recent report from Fightful Select indicates that Hit Row found out they were getting called up to the main roster by accident. AJ Francis approached John Laurinaitis to ask why they weren’t being used in dark matches during TV tapings. Shortly after, they were added to the schedule.
Top Dolla thought that indicated that Hit Row was being called up. He found out for sure when a Fox executive told him, but the executive wasn’t supposed to let them know. The exec told them to “kayfabe it” and act surprised.
Hit Row was selected by SmackDown during the 2021 WWE Draft. The team was released on November 18th. They have since reunited on the independent circuit, while Swerve has gone on to stardom with AEW.
Fans who regularly follow wrestling news shouldn’t be surprised about Hit Row’s awkward call-up. WWE recently released Malcolm Bivens and Persia Pirotta while they were in the middle of ongoing storylines. The real shock for the group came when they were given their wholesale release a month after being called up.
