Tommaso Ciampa was a top star in Triple H’s NXT. Ciampa main evented multiple pay-per-views and was involved in a feud of the year with former NXT star Johnny Gargano on the black and gold brand. Now he’s on RAW, but plans have already changed for him.

Ciampa squared off against Apollo Crews in Main Event tapings ahead of tonight’s RAW. According to Fightful Select, the former NXT champion worked as a babyface during his match against Crews.
This is interesting, because Ciampa is playing a heel character on the red brand. Ciampa laid out a returning Mustafa Ali last week on RAW, turning heel in the process.
Ciampa’s originally scheduled match on Main Event was an interesting one Ciampa’s main event match against Apollo Crews puzzled many, and for good reason.
Last week, Ciampa attacked Mustafa Ali on WWE Raw, signifying a heel run for the former NXT Champion. This week on the WWE Main Event tapings before Raw, he surprisingly worked as a babyface against Apollo Crews, picking up a win.
The outlet further stated that Ciampa was originally supposed to face Finn Balor in the Main Event tapings. The internal rundowns had him play his heel character against Balor.
Fightful Select learned that wasn’t the original plan. Ciampa was actually originally scheduled to take on former Universal Champion Finn Balor according to internal rundowns.
When we inquired, it was confirmed that they would have had him work in the heel role. The two last competed against one another in November 2019, and teamed together in February
Ciampa made his main roster debut as a face on the April 11th episode of RAW. He was interrupted by Ezekiel and Kevin Owens. You can check out his debut in this video below.
