Sammy Guevara lost the AEW TNT Championship to Scorpio Sky in a ladder match on this week’s episode of Dynamite. During the match, Sammy attempted another spectacular high-flying maneuver from the ladder. Sky was unable to properly catch Guevara, and he landed awkwardly on his shoulder and neck.
The match continued after some stalling, but it appears Sammy Guevara was injured during the spot. The west coast feed of the show was even edited to hide the mistake. Fortunately, Guevara was able to finish the match, but his status going forward is questionable.
In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer discussed the injury. Sammy is banged up, but there is no word other than saying that he will be OK. The scary moment had a lot of fans wondering if he had seriously injured himself.
“Sammy Guevara was injured on 4/27 in the ladder match where he lost the TNT title to Scorpio Sky. It was a few minutes into the match when he climbed to nearly the top of a ladder and came off with an attempt at a 630 bodyblock and the speed he came down was so fast that Sky couldn’t break his fall and he landed on his neck and his left shoulder. He said he was okay but hurt his neck and his back. They were in split screen for the next several minutes.
Guevara was just laying there. Sky was stalling since he easily could have climbed the ladder and won and then they’d be several minutes early and in a commercial break. So he basically played to the crowd and stalled, but it did get silly because it was clear he could win for at least a minute and climbed so slow to allow Guevara have time to recover. Evidently they didn’t like this segment because on the West Coast feed, that side of the screen was black rather than showing what happened as it did air live in the rest of the countr6y. When he did finally climb, Guevara, who had laid there not moving, was able to gets up and tip over the ladder. Then Tay Conti hit Sky in the back which enabled him to sell until Guevara recovered. And as soon as he did, Guevara did something totally nuts again. He went to the top rope and climbed to the very top of another ladder and jumped off, basically doing the diamond cutter spot that he did in the Cody Rhodes ladder match. But this time as Guevara flew it was Sky who caught him in a diamond cutter and they both crashed to the mat. No word on severity past Guevara saying he will be okay.”
Sammy Guevara has made a name for himself with his death-defying moves in ladder matches. While fans love it, there is always danger to such high-risk offense. Hopefully, Sammy’s injury isn’t serious, and we will see him back in the ring soon.
