WWE completely changed on the night of November 9, 1997. Bret Hart was scheduled to face Shawn Michaels in one of the most controversial main events in wrestling history. Vince McMahon infamously forced the timekeeper to ring the bell despite Hart never submitting in what became known as the “Montreal Screwjob.”

Documentary film crews captured the entire hectic scene in what later became the climax of “Wrestling with Shadows.” It was the first time that a real-life wrestling double-cross had to be explained on air. Fans were furious with the way Hart was treated, even though he was leaving the company for WCW shortly thereafter.

Road Dogg talked about the screwjob on the latest episode of his “Oh… You Didn’t Know” podcast. The former D-Generation X member said he’s still not sure if everything that happened that night was real. Road Dogg believes everything is a work in wrestling.

“When you go to the arena and it’s a TV or Pay-Per-View day, you kind of just stick to your match, and at this point, that’s what I did. I remember I wasn’t watching the show at the time. I probably should have been. I could have learned something, but I didn’t see what happened.

All of a sudden, everybody was running to the monitors to try to find out what was going down. What I remember that night the most was two things. One, the loogie that Bret spit on Vince McMahon like, holy mackerel, man. Yeah, that was disgusting, but what a shot, what an aim, like it was great. Then I remember staying late at the building and Vince coming out of the locker room with a big red and purple eyeball. From what I understand he let Bret swing on him. I don’t doubt that one bit because that’s the kind of man Vince is.

I’m still not 100% sure it was all real, and that’s just me being honest with you. I know I’m cynical because I’m a wrestler, I’m one of the boys, and I think everything’s a work.”

Several wrestlers as well as referee Earl Hebner have gone on record saying the Montreal Screwjob was a work. As long as there are scripted storylines in the world of wrestling, people will continue to question whether what happened in Montreal was real or fake. Road Dogg isn’t entirely sure.
