Ronda Rousey is arguably the biggest name to transition from MMA to pro wrestling. The Baddest Woman on the Planet signed a contract with WWE in 2018 and it didn’t take her long to become a huge name. She also explained why she uses the ankle lock.
Ronda Rousey returned during the Royal Rumble Premium Live Event this year. Since then, she has started using the ankle lock as one of her signature moves. She has used the armbar throughout her UFC career, so this was something new for her.
Rousey has worked extensively with Kurt Angle, especially before her in-ring debut at WrestleMania 34. While speaking in a vlog on her YouTube channel, Ronda Rousey explained why she uses the angle lock. It is ultimately her paying homage to Kurt Angle.
“I just really wanna be able to put over Kurt as the whole reason that I’m doing the ankle lock, and it’s a way to pay homage to him. And that’s all I really care about getting out because he was my first mentor in this business, and I never really got to honor him outside of our tag.
I mean people compare us all the time because we were athletes outside of WWE and then came to it. As an Olympian, he has been like my hero since I was a little kid, so I love that he gave me the blessing to use the ankle lock.”
Ronda Rousey will be facing off against Charlotte Flair for the Smackdown Women’s Championship at WrestleMania Backlash. We’ll have to see whether Rousey will win the match or not.
