Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti have been teamed up on screen in AEW for several weeks now. The real-life couple has not been getting the reaction they’ve hoped for. Despite being placed in a feud with Dan Lambert and American Top Team as babyfaces, fans have been booing them out of the building every chance they get.
That same negative reaction grew exponentially at last night’s taping of AEW Battle of the Belts 2. Guevara took on Scorpio Sky for the TNT Championship. In the aftermath, there was an angle where Paige VanZant attacked Tay Conti. The crowd was not behind Sammy and Tay. To further incite the crowd, Guevara and Conti began to make out in the ring.
The latest booing incident was discussed on Wrestling Observer Radio. Dave Meltzer said that if the fans are going to boo, there’s no reason not to turn the couple heel. Fans are going to boo them no matter what, so AEW will have no choice but to go with it.
“We know them making out is going to get heat. They’re probably going to go in that direction. That’s probably what they should be doing. It is what they should be doing and that’s fine if people want to boo them.”
Fans who are interested in spoilers for the results of Battle of the Belts can see them right here at Ringside News. The reaction to Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti is not what AEW planned, as Dan Lambert has always been positioned as a major heel. There may be a role reversal coming over the next few AEW shows.
Time will tell how fans react to a heel Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti. Sometimes, wrestling storylines don’t go as planned. How AEW adapts will go a long way toward keeping fans interested in the storyline.
