Cody Rhodes made his return to WWE at WrestleMania 38 amid a ton of fanfare. The American Nightmare quickly became a major player in the promotion. Even his presentation has been different from other WWE superstars.
Rhodes brought his music from AEW with him, as well as elements of his ring entrance. Fans may have also noticed that Cody Rhodes has been using words that other WWE superstars typically cannot. Cody has referred to “wrestling,” “wrestlers,” and “belts,” all widely known to be frowned upon by Vince McMahon.
On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed Cody’s interesting vocabulary. While many fans believe Cody has been allowed to go off-script in his promos, that is not the case. It’s all a part of his gimmick, and it’s all scripted.
“This is all scripted. His gimmick, apparently, is that he gets to say the words that nobody else gets to say and gets corrected.”
Bryan Alvarez noted that Cody Rhodes’ entire gimmick seems to be built around being a former AEW talent. It was noted that Cody teased saying “sh*t,” which is common in AEW. During his segment with The Miz, he was frequently corrected for his use of banned words.
WWE wants a different presentation for Cody Rhodes. It has been compelling to see him do a lot of the same things he did in AEW while under the WWE umbrella. Time will tell how Cody’s character evolves as we move forward.
