In 2019, Roman Reigns’ wrestling future was seriously in question. The WWE superstar was diagnosed with Leukemia. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated his return after Reigns successfully beat the disease.

It seems like ancient history, but at the time, many fans weren’t sure if Roman Reigns would ever compete again. Fortunately, Reigns recovered and entered remission. Since then, he has become the top heel in the company and will face Brock Lesnar in the main event of WrestleMania 38.

Reigns recently spoke with Marc Raimondi of ESPN, where he said he wasn’t sure if he was ever going to return to WWE. During his time off for the pandemic, Roman decided he wanted to pursue a new creative direction. Fortunately for fans, it was the right decision.

“Reigns and Heyman said they might not have returned to WWE unless they were given permission by WWE CEO Vince McMahon to execute this story in a mostly unscripted fashion.”

Roman Reigns said he wanted to be viewed as the most powerful WWE superstar of all time. From there, the Tribal Chief storyline emerged. It has been the hottest thing in WWE ever since.

Reigns traveled a difficult path to get to what WWE is promoting as the biggest WrestleMania match of all time. Just a few years ago, he wasn’t sure if he was going to return to WWE. Now, he will be defending his yard on the grandest stage of them all.
