Owen Hart was regarded as one of the best pro wrestlers to ever compete inside a WWE ring. Unfortunately, his life ended far too early as he tragically lost his life at Over The Edge in 1999 as he fell to his death. Tony Khan also hinted at excellent tournaments for the Owen Hart Cup recently.
As previously reported, AEW will be partnering up with the Owen Hart Foundation to honor the legacy of the legendary wrestler. The working relationship will include the annual Owen Hart Cup Tournament in AEW. The winner of the tournament will receive a Cup known as “The Owen.”
While speaking on the Busted Open Radio podcast, AEW President Tony Khan talked about the upcoming Owen Hart Cup tournament. Khan hinted at excellent preliminary tournaments for the Owen Hart Cup tournament as well.
“I’m excited, in May, we’re going to start The Owen Hart Cup tournament. And before the cup tournament starts, similar to the Olympics or the World Cup or a lot of the big tournament events out there, there’s qualifying. You know, pre-tournament qualifying. And we’re going to have that for The Owen Hart Cup, both the women’s tournament and the men’s tournament.
And I’m really excited about getting in there and finding out who’s going to make the competition. I’ll have announcements coming up soon about The Owen Hart qualifying matches, but I promise the fans these tournaments, both the men’s tournament and the women’s tournament, will be excellent.”
It was said that the company worked on the Owen Hart deal for well over a year. AEW’s partnership with the Owen Hart Foundation is likely to benefit the company in the long run as well. We’ll have to see how the preliminary tournaments will turn out to be.
