This year’s WWE Hall of Fame Class is getting an unexpected inductee. The Undertaker and Vader have already been announced. Both have world-class credentials in the wrestling industry. The latest announced member was a bit of a surprise.
WWE announced via Twitter that Queen Sharmell will be the latest inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame. Sharmell worked alongside real-life husband Booker T during her run with the company. The gimmick was remembered best for “King Booker” using a fake English accent to play up the royalty aspect. This news was first reported by Brad Shepard on Feb 23rd.
Sharmell started as a member of the Nitro Girls dance team in WCW under the name Storm after winning the Miss Black America pageant in 1991. Sharmell also had a successful career as a professional dancer, including a lengthy stint with James Brown. Sharmell moved on to WWE after the company was bought by WCW.
Things didn’t work out with Sharmell’s in-ring training, and she became a backstage interviewer. In 2005, she was placed on television as a valet for Booker T. The king and queen gimmick began after Booker won the 2006 King of the Ring.
Sharmell went on to have one of the worst televised matches in pro wrestling history with Jenna Morasca in Impact Wrestling. Sharmell then went on to various other roles with TNA. Most of them involved her husband.
Sharmell is a surprising entrant into the WWE Hall of Fame. Booker T’s run as king was quite memorable for many fans of the era. Now she is being recognized for being a huge part of the career of one of WWE’s best performers.
