Vince McMahon offered Pat McAfee a match at WrestleMania 38 during his interview on the former NFL punter’s show last week. McAfee was all too excited to accept. WWE later revealed that Pat’s opponent would be Austin Theory.
The news left some fans disappointed. WWE had originally listed Pat McAfee vs Vince McMahon on internal documents for WrestleMania. The match itself has changed, but the dynamic has not.
If Vince McMahon were to do the match, Austin Theory would likely take most if not all of the bumps. Vince McMahon is in his mid-70s and it would be dangerous for him to attempt a full match. On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer pointed out that the idea is still to put the heat of the match on Pat McAfee and Vince McMahon.
“With the Austin Theory thing… Vince is going to be involved unless he’s changed his mind, but Vince is going to be involved in some way, but I don’t think it’s going to be a handicap match. I think it’s going to be Vince overseeing the match or in the corner, but the heat of the match is going to be Vince and Pat McAfee for whatever reason. That angle, I don’t know which week they’re going to shoot it.”
The story will essentially be the same. WWE will eventually present an angle to create some tension between Pat McAfee and Vince McMahon. That will lead to McMahon’s involvement in Pat’s match with Austin Theory at WrestleMania.
We will have to wait and see how things play out. Vince will be heavily involved in the match in some way. Austin Theory will be there to take his bumps for him. No matter how it plays out, Vince McMahon will be a big player in the story of the bout.
