WWE planted the seeds for a feud between Vince McMahon and Pat McAfee on last night’s episode of Raw. McMahon and Theory discussed Vince’s upcoming appearance on McAfee’s podcast during a backstage segment. Austin floated the idea that he should go to protect the WWE boss just in case Pat tries any funny business.

From the way the segment played out, it sounds like Austin Theory will work as a proxy to allow a match between Vince McMahon and Pat McAfee to take place without the 76-year-old being subject to serious injury. Many in the WWE Universe probably wondered why they wouldn’t just make it a match between Theory and McAfee with McMahon somehow involved. Dave Meltzer went over the details on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio.

“Theory is coming [to the interview], that’s what he said. I’m sure Austin Theory is going to like, do the work, do the heavy lifting. But, if it’s Austin Theory vs Pat McAfee, there is zero marquis value in that match.

It’s like, why even do it if you’re advertising it? The match might be good, it might not be good. That’s not the point. The point is, it’s WrestleMania and nobody would give a sh*t about Austin Theory with Pat McAfee.

Vince McMahon and Pat McAfee, people will probably… I don’t know. I don’t know about the intrigue of a 76-year-old guy wrestling, but, obviously, they think so because that’s one of the big stops they’re pulling out is Vince in a match.”

WWE believes Vince McMahon can help sell tickets and draw eyes to WrestleMania. It remains to be seen just how physical McMahon will be able to get at his age. Austin Theory will get his WrestleMania moment this year. It will most likely be in the form of protecting Vince McMahon from a former punter.
