The Great Khali has traveled the world with WWE and at one point was one of the most recognizable wrestlers in the world. Khali’s massive size and appeal to the gigantic Indian market had WWE seeing dollar signs. After a long run, Khali has moved on to other things.
Khali has taken a particular interest in politics recently. The Indian star’s allegiances are to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is considered by many to be a right-wing, anti-democratic radical. Modi has been called India’s Donald Trump.
The Sun reported on Khali joining the political group. Modi is a controversial leader who many believe threatens the nation’s democracy. Some believe Khali is simply clout chasing, noting that he has changed his party affiliation in the past based on who has the most to offer. Khali made a brief statement on his new allegiance.
“I have wrestled all over the world. If I just loved money and fame, then I would have stayed in the United States and in the WWE. However, I have always loved my country.
I was also impressed by all the work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. So I told myself that even I should join him and help the country progress. I am a fan of his hard work and thinking.”
We’ll see if the Great Khali has any further political ambitions beyond simple party membership. It is not unprecedented to see wrestlers run for office. Jesse Ventura was governor of Minnesota. Kane is the sitting mayor of Knoxville, Tennessee. Antonio Inoki served in the Japanese senate. Even former president Trump is a WWE Hall of Famer.
