Nyla Rose is the first transgender wrestler in a major American wrestling promotion. She is a former AEW Women’s Champion and one of the top stars in the division.

Rose recently sat down with Sports Illustrated for an interview. The 39-year-old talked about the transphobic sign that popped out during her match against Ruby Soho on the Dec. 22 edition of Wednesday Night Dynamite.

“For the most part, people understood why that sign was wrong,” she said. She continued, “Maybe that person didn’t quite understand the gravity of what they were doing. You want to boo, that’s cool. But there is a line.”

“People might feel it’s a conflict of their beliefs by simply respecting someone else, but it’s not. You don’t have to understand or even agree with somebody’s situation to show them simple respect and kindness, like respecting their pronouns and respecting their way of life.

“I’d love for people to be cool with it, but if that’s not your thing, it’s not your thing. But shouldn’t people want to treat their fellow humans with a little respect and kindness?”

The fan who brought the sign held it up on the hard camera side during the Rose-Soho bout. At one point in the match, Rose noticed the sign and flipped off the guy. It was later confirmed that AEW security escorted the person out of the building.
