Rey Mysterio is currently one of the most well-known wrestlers in the world. Mysterio has been wrestling for over 40 years now. Despite his humble beginnings in the industry, in 1989, the wrestling veteran was not even paid in cash for his first match.
Brandon Walker of Barstool Wrestling recently interviewed the former world champion. They were talking about the former world champion’s long career in the sport. Mysterio expressed his gratitude for being able to do this for so long, saying, that he is very privileged.
So I was talking to Edge the other day in the locker room. He was saying, ‘Rey, you know, we’re the only two guys left that have been part of five decades of wrestling.’ I started in 89. So I was part of the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 10s, and 20s Now, That’s amazing, man. I’m truly blessed to be able to be in this for this amount of time.
When Walker expressed his surprise at Rey Mysterio’s long career in the ring, the wrestling legend recalled his first match. He said that it happened in a church parking lot and that he was compensated with a sandwich and a Coca-Cola.
That was my first match. I was 14 years old. Imagine that. It counts because I got paid. Not money, but I got a sandwich and a Coca-Cola. It was in front of maybe 80 fans outside of a church, in a parking lot church in Tijuana.
Rey Mysterio also discussed the upcoming Royal Rumble PPV, becoming the cover hero of the WWE 2K22 video game, and other topics. The whole interview is available in the attached video below.
Thankfully, due to years of hard work, Rey Mysterio is making far more than a sandwich per match now.
