Matt Cardona has a lot going for him these days. Since leaving WWE, Matt has built a red hot career as an independent wrestler. Cardona is having a nice run with Impact Wrestling. Long Island Iced Z’s heel work in GCW has been out of this world.
Cardona broke new ground with his “Internet Champion” persona developed during his time with WWE. Wrestlers having vlogs, podcasts, and YouTube channels is extremely common today. Every Danhausen, Evil Uno, and Sammy Guevara owes a debt to Matt Cardona paving the way as a content creator who also wrestles. No one can understate how influential Cardona eventually was.
Cardona has portrayed an invading WWE superstar in GCW. Along with Chelsea Green, Matt has trolled the hardcore fans by acting like he’s too good for them. As with every artist, a little bit of Matt Cardona the character comes from the actual person. Matt touched on that today when he tweeted an epic burn about what might have happened if he stayed in WWE.
“Man. I really wish we didn’t get fired. We could have been chasing around that 24/7 title right now.”
At last weekend’s The Wrld on GCW pay-per-view, Matt Cardona took the Hammerstein Ballroom by storm. A wild match with Joey Janella featured several call backs to WWE’s ECW One Night Stand tribute shows which took place at the same venue. Cardona even brought out former WWE superstars X Pac and Virgil to further rile up the GCW faithful.
Cardona’s recent work calls to mind the “anti-hardcore” gimmick Mick Foley used during his time in ECW. Foley himself played along with Matt’s heel persona, although he obviously respects what Cardona is doing. At any rate, it sure beats chasing the 24/7 title!
