WWE presents one of their most exciting events of the year this weekend with the Royal Rumble. The women’s Rumble match has already generated a ton of excitement. Impact Knockouts Champion Mickie James will compete for a chance to go to WrestleMania. There are also several big veteran names coming back to wrestle in the match.
There have been 21 competitors announced for the women’s Royal Rumble thus far. News recently broke that WWE was trying to bring in wrestlers who they recently fired. The IInspiration (IIconics in WWE) turned down an invite to the party. Roster cuts have left the main roster without enough women to fill the 30-person Rumble.
On today’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez discussed WWE’s situation. They need nine more wrestlers to have a full 30-woman Royal Rumble match. The pickings are slim, so WWE may draw on some NXT talent to fill the void.
“So we still need nine women. They’re asking fired women to come back to be in this Royal Rumble. I would expect Raquel Gonzalez to be in the Royal Rumble. Maybe they’ll bring up all of Mandy’s crew [Toxic Attraction].”
WWE has put themselves in an unenviable position. A last-minute scramble to find bodies to fill the match is not where they’d like to be. It has been great for generating online buzz and speculation, though.
Summer Rae, The Bella Twins, Lita, and Mickie James were all brought in to fill up the remaining spots. If nobody else from outside of WWE competes, that would make it a certainty that NXT wrestlers would have to be in the Royal Rumble. Time will tell if there are any more surprises coming.
