Matt Cardona has made a great side hustle in Game Changer Wrestling as an invading heel from WWE. Cardona has referenced his Zack Ryder character and WWE history to the disdain of the hardcore GCW fanbase. Cardona took it to another level at last night’s The Wrld on GCW pay-per-view.
GCW hyped the show as the biggest event in independent wrestling history. A major storyline involved Cardona and his wife Chelsea Green quitting the company. Matt even mockingly calls himself “the deathmatch king.” He even recently crowned himself as the ECW Television Champion after defeating Rhino.
It was no surprise that Cardona’s mockery gimmick surfaced at the PPV. The Hammerstein Ballroom crowd looked completely confused as Enter Sandman hit during Cardona’s entrance. The Sandman competed for ECW at the venue many times during his run with the company.
Cardona also wore a flannel vest that said “F*ck Mick Foley” on the back. The former Long Island Iced Z is pulling no punches with his anti-hardcore gimmick. The hardcore legend took to YouTube to respond.
“Hello everyone, it’s The Hardcore Legend Mick Foley addressing the Matt Cardona situation. Matt took a shot at Mrs. Foley’s baby boy last night with his interesting choice of ring attire. While I appreciate the GCW fans flipping him off on my behalf, while I appreciate my friend, The Savage Gentlemen, whose wedding I officiated, that is real, wanting to do battle with him on my behalf.
The truth is, from a personal standpoint, I was happy for him. Yeah, it made me laugh because I felt like Matt was done wrong in WWE. He reached for that brass ring, grabbed it, and was asked to return it. Ultimately, everyone who leaves a major company has a choice to make when they hit the independent scene.
And that choice is, ‘Do I just do the same things I did, the things that I was known for, or do I reinvent myself?’ I call that the Drew McIntyre route, the road less traveled. That is what Matt Cardona has done. He’s completely reinvented himself and in doing so has become one of the most enjoyable and valuable assets on the wrestling scene. Knowing that I’m playing just a small part in that reinvention, a tiny part, that makes me happy, and in conclusion, f*ck Matt Cardona.”
Mick Foley did a similar anti-hardcore gimmick during his stint in ECW. Foley clearly appreciates what Cardona is doing. Matt Cardona is drawing nuclear heat any time he enters a GCW event.
