Rey Mysterio has been very busy lately. In addition to his in-ring schedule, Mysterio has also become an ambassador for the upcoming WWE2K22 video game. Rey was recently revealed as the cover star for the highly anticipated release. That may have played into his booking in WWE.
Rey and Dominik Mysterio parted ways on camera when Mysterio told his son he needed to go do his own thing. Ever since then, the pair have been a tag team as if nothing happened. It appears the breakup storyline is being held off.
The WWE2K22 game using Rey Mysterio as the face of the launch may have a lot to do with the split being abandoned. It could be that they didn’t want a father who just left his son on his own promoting a video game. Dave Meltzer discussed the situation in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Rey Mysterio will be on the cover of the WWE 2K22 video game which comes out on 3/11. As far as I know, this is the first time 2K has chose to put a wrestler as the cover performer of the game who the company pushes as a lower mid-carder.
Speaking of which, they did that angle where Rey & Dominik broke up as a team where Rey told Dominik he needed to go on his own, and since then, they’ve been a tag team and seemed to have dropped the angle building to the split.”
We’ll see how long WWE waits to revisit the split of Rey and Dominik Mysterio. They might have also paused this idea because a different tag team is set to break up soon as well. For now, Rey is the face of a game fans have been waiting for since WWE2K20. The inevitable split will eventually happen, it’s just a matter of when.
