Vince McMahon calls the creative shots in WWE, and it has been that way since he bought the company from his father. Like it or not, he has his way of doing things and that includes babyfaces losing quite a lot.
Matt Hardy has had a lot to say lately. That’s why the AEW star started his own podcast, “The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy.” On the show, Matt tells stories of his career and how the wrestling business has evolved. There are frequently very interesting tidbits that come up during the conversation.
Matt recently spoke about a TLC match where the Hardy Boyz were supposed to win the WWE Tag Team Championships. Vince McMahon stepped in. The boss offered Hardy some insight on how he thinks babyfaces should be booked.
“Well, that was supposed to be our big win and then he said, ‘Well, it’s too predictable. Everybody in that venue is going to know you’re going to win and they’re expecting you to win, so I don’t want to do that. Let’s do it the next show.’
And I think sometimes that’s a good thing, especially when you have babyfaces that are over and that been in this long rivalry, and the fans want to be rewarded with this proper payoff. I would have loved to have the win there and I think it would’ve been the time to do the win, and us being the champions and it also would’ve kind of changed the history of the TLC matches a little bit.
But Vince is a big advocate of, ‘If you’re over as a babyface, there are times where you don’t need to win, it doesn’t make a difference.’ And that’s kind of how we looked at.”
Matt Hardy has been teasing an upcoming reunion with his brother, Jeff Hardy. Jeff was recently released from his WWE contract after he walked out in the middle of a match. Since then, fans have been clamoring to see the pair in AEW.
Wrestling is one of those things where sometimes the chase is more fun. When a babyface is over with the fans, crowds will get behind a them more and more. Sometimes, it’s better to hold off and keep riding the wave.
