16-time World Champion John Cena’s contributions to WWE cannot be understated as he was the face of the company during the PG Era. He remained a babyface for the entire time and never turned heel. It seems Cena might have become a heel during his high profile feud against The Rock.
John Cena showed he could be an effective heel with his Doctor of Thuganomics gimmick but WWE never really pulled the trigger once Cena became the face of the company. Vince McMahon was even proud of rejecting ideas for Cena’s heel turn.
While speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, John Cena talked about him never turning heel and usually receiving a more mixed response from fans. Cena admitted that Vince McMahon considered turning him heel against The Rock during their feud at WrestleMania 28.
“I remember Vince toyed with the idea of turning me heel versus The Rock in Miami. I said, ‘No problem, I understand, I’ll do it. Just remember that we are so deep in at this point that we can’t do it and then jump back because we’ll be sunk at both ends.’ If we do it, I have to be the opposite of virtue, I have to be pure evil and we go all in.’ From a believability standpoint, people always see me in uniform because I want people to know that what they see is someone they can relate to. He decided against it and at that point he said, ‘I don’t think we’re ever going to do it.’
Even Jim Ross couldn’t accept the fact that John Cena never turned heel but it is simply something fans and pro wrestlers alike have to accept at this point in time, as John Cena is unlikely ever turn heel.
