Samoa Joe was released from his WWE NXT contract today, one of many big cuts to the developmental brand. The company targeted people that Triple H brought in and Samoa Joe’s name seemed destined to be a part of those cuts.

Ringside News exclusively reported that these cuts in NXT were a personal shot at Triple H. They axed a number of his handpicked people from Road Dogg to William Regal. Now Shawn Michaels’ name is trending as fans wonder if he’s next.

The Samoan Submission Machine tweeted out following his release. He considers himself lucky to have been a part of something so special. This is a big loss for NXT and a sad one at that.

Extremely fortunate and grateful to all the young & amazing talent I had the pleasure of working with in the past months. Only saddened at the loss of an “excuse” to see their continued growth & achievement . I am very excited for there future,….. and mine

Samoa Joe was NXT Champion, but relinquished his title. He was spotted at a WWE tryout later on fulfilling his duties as talent scout. We’ll have to see who WWE gets to fill Samoa Joe’s spot at this point.

Many fans wondered if Samoa Joe was on his way to AEW when the company released him before. Now it seems that Tony Khan’s company will have another opportunity to sign an incredibly gifted performer and pro wrestling mind.
