Jonathan Gresham walked out of Ring of Honor’s Final Battle pay-per-view as the company’s world champion. It was a major accomplishment for The Octopus. He plans to defend the gold against the best wrestlers in the world despite the promotion’s uncertain future.

Gresham is one of those who remained loyal to ROH until the bitter end. The company announced in late 2021 that they would be going on hiatus to reorganize with a return set for the Spring of 2022. The champion would carry on the company’s legacy in the meantime.

We know now that Jonathan Gresham is officially a free agent. Sean Sapp of Fightful tweeted the news this afternoon. It turns out Gresham has been finished with his ROH contract since the week after Final Battle.

“Not only is Jonathan Gresham now a free agent, FightfulSelect.com learned that Gresham has actually been a free agent since the week after ROH Final Battle. He still maintains a good relationship with the company as title defenses are approved through them.”

The plan seems to be to have the ROH World Championship become a touring title during ROH’s time away. Gresham said in December that he would like to return the belt to its previous status. He hopes to defend it against big names like Bryan Danielson and CM Punk.

As a free agent, Jonathan Gresham can wrestle wherever he pleases. He will still have to receive the blessing of ROH if he wants to defend the title. Time will tell where Gresham will show up with the belt first.
