Rey Mysterio is a true veteran in the world of professional wrestling and he is proud of his luchador heritage and legacy. He has won championships in various promotions all over the world in his three-decade-long career and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
Mysterio came back to WWE in 2018 and since then has been involved in a variety of high profile feuds, especially teaming up with his son Dominik Mysterio over the past couple of years.
While speaking on The Kurt Angle Show, Rey Mysterio revealed why WWE took so long in hiring him after WCW folded in 2001. This is because WWE wanted to wait until his WCW contract had expired.
So, when the company was bought out I was told right off the bat that they were interested in me but they wanted me to let my WCW contract run out. Once it ended, we would sit down and do business.
I thought that it was a nice way of saying, ‘We’re not interested,’ because a lot of contracts were bought out. Chavo’s, Booker’s, a lot of guys. So, again I’m thinking, ‘Is Vince really gonna open up the doors for me because he doesn’t believe in small guys?’
I would hear that sometimes from Nash, from Hall but I never lost hope and sure enough when that contract expired JR reached out and said, ‘Okay, we’re ready to do business,’ and that’s when I signed. So, they kept their word.”
Mysterio established himself as one of the most popular and beloved babyfaces in the company’s history and that’s what matters in the end.
