Matt Cardona has undergone one of the most dramatic reinventions in recent pro wrestling history. After years of being unable to break the glass ceiling in WWE, Cardona bet on himself. The former Zack Ryder has been having a very impressive run since leaving the company.
Cardona has appeared in both Impact Wrestling and in Game Changer Wrestling. He has competed in full-bore, no-holds-barred deathmatches. It has been a far cry from his Internet Champion character of a previous life.
Working as a cocky, invading heel from another company, Matt Cardona has hit a new creative high as he takes chances and tries new things in wrestling. His character wants things to go even bigger. In a recent chat with Barstool Sports’ Rasslin’ podcast, Matt said he wants to challenge a hardcore legend.
“F*ck Mick Foley. That’s all I have to say. This guy, you’d think he’d be so proud of me. Fellow Long Islander, fellow death match king, but he’s turned his back on me. I don’t know what his deal is. I don’t know if it’s that I beat up his son-in-law Frank the Clown. I don’t know if he’s hot about that. I think he just needs to stop running his mouth.
Right before I got released from WWE, my personal writer was Dewey Foley, Mick’s son. So if Mick doesn’t shut the f*ck up, I’m going to have Dewey Foley book me vs. Mick Foley in a death match, and of course I’m going to win.”
Matt Cardona is currently pulling double creative duty. He is a sympathetic babyface in Impact. In GCW, he is everything the hardcore deathmatch audience hates about wrestling. A deathmatch with Mick Foley is highly unlikely. That doesn’t mean there won’t be many more surprises in Cardona’s immediate future.
