WWE knows that their Christmas episodes often come with lower ratings and poor attendance. People are busy meeting with family and enjoying the holidays and often don’t have time to watch their weekly programming. It’s baked into the culture of WWE to do holiday specials that don’t have many consequences in the grand scheme of what’s going on in the company.

The promotion has tried to make holiday shows special in the past. The efforts were met with disappointment from employees. WWE wrestlers are on the road more than they are home. Wrestlers would obviously prefer to be with their families during the holiday season.

WWE decided to tape matches at the December 17th show rather than attempting to put on a stand-alone special this year. PW Insider reported on the results. You can check out the full spoilers for the Christmas Eve SmackDown below.

  • Sami Zayn won a 12 Days of Christmas Gauntlet Match to qualify for an Intercontinental Title match with Shinsuke Nakamura at the Day 1 PPV
  • Charlotte Flair defeated Toni Storm to defend the SmackDown Women’s Championship
  • Drew McIntyre and The New Day defeated The Usos and Madcap Moss in a Christmas Eve Street Fight. McIntyre pinned Madcap after a Claymore.

They will undoubtedly have other backstage segments that didn’t air for the live crowd.
