Kevin Owens has been a mainstay in WWE since taking NXT by storm in 2014. He’s been a player on the mid-card scene and main events. Owens will have a shot at the WWE Championship against Big E, Seth Rollins, and Bobby Lashley at the upcoming Day 1 pay-per-view. There were a lot of reasons behind his decision to sign a new multi-year deal with the company.

Fans were stunned by the news that KO had re-signed. Many expected him to jump to AEW, joining his long-time friends The Young Bucks and Adam Cole. Instead, he’s sticking with WWE.

Owens originally planned to share the news with fans on a podcast that will be released tomorrow. Pat Laprade is a WWE French language announcer who has a good relationship with Owens. The two recorded a podcast where they discussed his decision, but the news broke before its scheduled release. Laparde confirmed the news via Twitter.

“I can confirm that Kevin Owens has signed a multi-year contract to stay with WWE. I had Kevin on my podcast yesterday, we were going to release it tomorrow, but Sean beat me to it. Still, more from KO tomorrow about his decision.”

Owens may have recently hinted at the affiliation with Leparde. After Bobby Lashley tweeted about the upcoming title match, Kevin responded via Twitter. He mentioned that the French commentary team identifies him as a former Universal Champion, which the English announcers don’t. Both Owens and Laparde are from Quebec and speak French fluently.

In the span of one day, Kevin Owens has gone from being an afterthought in the four-way WWE Championship match at Day 1 to a potential winner. It makes what looked like an easy match to predict much more interesting. Kevin Owens could walk out of Atlanta as the WWE Champion.
