Freddie Prinze Jr. is perhaps mostly known for his roles in film and television over the years, but for wrestling fans, he also served as writer for WWE for two specific periods in the company’s history. His WWE first stint was between 2008 and 2009 and he came back in 2010, working on storylines until 2012.
There have been many stories told about Prinze Jr’s time in WWE as a writer, and some of them negative. He claims that he tried very hard to work with some of the tag teams that were around the company at that time that he was there.
During his Wrestling With Freddie Podcast, he shed some light on the tag team division in WWE at the time and how hard he worked to shed a positive light on them overall, he stating that he failed both The Usos and TJ Wilson and Harry Smith of The Hart Dynasty. He also made a glaring statement about what Vince McMahon told him about tag teams within his company.
“I connected with Harry a lot and I really want to get him and TJ (Wilson) over. I worked hard to do it. I failed those boys. I never got over that. I failed The Usos too. Tag team wrestling is tough. I remember Vince, I was working so hard on building up a tag team division and Vince said, ‘Freddie, I gotta pay four guys for one fucking match.’
I kind of went, ‘Oh.’ I had never looked at it like that. It’s show business. I was in charge of the Colon Brothers, I named Primo, that was my name. It kind of changed my perspective on things and the way I approached storylines. I couldn’t pitch for as much anymore.”
The Usos have since reached the top of the tag team division in WWE and Harry Smith, son of the legendary British Bulldog, was recently released from the company.
As for Freddie Prinze Jr., of course he has his podcast, and still makes television and film appearances. Most recently, he provided the voice for Caleb Dume in Star Wars: The Bad Batch and starred on the relaunch of Punky Brewster.
