Vince McMahon has been named by the Sports Business Journal as one of the most influential people in sports. The publication also listed WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon and WWE President Nick Khan. The group were listed under the category of “Media Influencers.”
SBJ said that Khan and the McMahons have worked to transform the company to a media business. They praised the brand’s big rights deal with Peacock. They also mentioned several high-profile projects that are in the works.
“There is clearly a repositioning of the WWE to a media business under Khan, who joined the company from CAA Sports in August 2020, especially with the move to Peacock as part of a five-year deal reported to be more than $1 billion.
High-profile projects include a multipart Netflix docuseries on Vince McMahon’s life and a deal with Blumhouse Television on a scripted series about the WWE in the 1990s.”
In September of 2021, Stephanie McMahon was named to a similar list. She ranked #2 on Forbes’ Most Influential CMO list. With that honor, she was praised for her help with creating the ThunderDome, which was the broadcast concept WWE tried to replace live fans during the pandemic. She’s received several honors for her work in marketing and brand-building.
WWE continues to be a major force in a changing media landscape. From the early days of pay-per-view to the WWE Network, the brand is always trying to stay ahead of media trends. The deal with Peacock netted WWE more than a billion dollars. Regardless of the in-ring product, the strategy has proven profitable.
