Bandido, the reigning ROH World Champion, was scheduled to defend his title one last time against Jonathan Gresham at the Ring of Honor Final Battle PPV on Saturday, December 11. Unfortunately, the champion tested positive for COVID-19, keeping him out of the show. We now know who his replacement will be.
Mike Johnson of PW Insider has reported that AEW will send former ROH champion Jay Lethal home to main event the company’s final show before going on a long hiatus. Tony Khan had promised to lend a helping hand to the show earlier in the day. Fans speculated that might include lending talent for the show. Lethal is the perfect choice. He is Gresham’s former tag team partner. He is also one of few who stuck with them after AEW opened up shop in 2019.
Lethal will be at least one AEW wrestler who returns to their old promotion to help send the company off. It’s unknown if any other AEW wrestlers will appear. Many on the AEW roster have extensive histories with ROH.
The Young Bucks, Bryan Danielson, CM Punk, Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, and a host of others spent significant time with the company. The historic event might be a big enough deal to Khan, who is an avid wrestling fan, to send others. They may not wrestle, but more appearances are possible.
Jay Lethal spent a combined fifteen years working for Ring of Honor. During his two stints with ROH, he won a bevy of championships, awards, and honors. Now, he will return home for one last time.
Lethal has held the ROH Pure Championship, the ROH World Tag Team Championship (with his opponent, Jonathan Gresham), and twice held the ROH TV and World titles. He was named the company’s Wrestler of the Year in 2018. He also wrestled for ROH at Madison Square Garden in 2019.
