Major League Wrestling will introduce a new standalone miniseries heavily influenced by the popular “Lucha Underground”. The new show will debut January 6 at 8 PM eastern on the promotion’s YouTube channel and FITE. It will air on beIN Sports Saturday, January 8, at 10 PM eastern.
According to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, MLW CEO Court Bauer said Mexico isn’t represented well enough in the American wrestling scene. Bauer hopes to bring authentic lucha libre to a U.S. audience. MLW Azteca is the company’s vision for that.
“Wrestling in America is on fire, but what’s missing is more representation from Mexico. Enter MLW Azteca and the masked world of authentic Mexican lucha libre.”
The new show is not officially connected to Lucha Underground. However, the actor who played LU boss Dario Cueto will be returning. Luis Fernandez-Gil will take on the role of Cesar Duran, the storyline booker of MLW Azteca.
The show will be filmed in Mexico. MLW promises to include top lucha libre talents from around the world. AAA Mega Champion El Hijo del Vikingo will be featured on the show. Other stars set to appear are Aero Star, Pagano, Psycho Clown, and more. They will also have crossover with the regular MLW roster, including champion Alexander Hammerstone.
The new project has been rumored for a long time. We now have confirmation when Azteca will drop. Lucha Underground fans have been waiting for this news since the show was unceremoniously dropped by El Rey Network.
