It was throughout 2020 and 2021 that Kenny Omega was known as “The Belt Collector.” That was for very good reason. At one point throughout the year, he held the top championships for not one, not two, but three different companies in the industry.

He was Impact World Champion, AEW World Champion and AAA Mega Champion, holding those titles at the same time. Of course he would lose the Impact Championship to Christian Cage and of course the AEW Championship to Adam Page.

It of course was revealed after he lost the AEW Championship at Full Gear that his body was riddled with injuries – injuries he needed to address and take care of, so the third prestigious championship he held, the AAA, he had to forfeit.

Plans for a tournament involving just who would be AAA’s new Mega Champion were announced, but as it would turn out, those were merely backup plans, as another plan, a now scrapped plan, was recently revealed.

Originally the match was to be between Omega and the challenger, Hijo Del Vikingo. The new match is set though, and the wrestlers involved in a five wrestler match include: Vikingo, Bandido, Samuray Del Sol, Bobby Fish and Jay Lethal.

As mentioned above, there was an original plan in the works that has been scrapped. According to a piece at Sports Illustrated by Justin Barrasso, the original plan was to have Vikingo, Laredo Kid, Dragon Lee, and Rey Fenix in a 4-way. This idea was scrapped because so many of these intended participants had other matches on the card.

The event, TripleMania Regia, takes place this Saturday. For the record, Omega was promised a match in which he could challenge the current champion when he is well enough to return.
