The IInspiration, Jessica McKay and Cassie Lee, have been seeing a lot of success in Impact Wrestling since their release from WWE. They immediately became a force in the Knockouts tag team division, winning the titles in their debut at Bound for Glory.
The duo talked to SI.com recently about what it was like to be released. Cassie Lee says it was a scary time. Fortunately, they were measured about their approach to building their independent brand.
“It was a very scary time when we were let go, especially since we were not U.S. citizens. Every decision we made impacted our future, so that creates a very daunting time. WWE has an incredible platform and amazing brand, but our success is now in our hands. We’re building something bigger different, something that belongs to us.”
McKay believes the move to Impact was the right choice for the team. The former IIconics member said they have the best women’s tag team division on the planet. She’s enjoying the journey so far.
“We’re so grateful to be champions of the best women’s tag division in the world. When we were free agents, the more Cassie and I discussed our options, the more Impact felt like the natural decision for us. We wanted to be with a company with a certain production level and roster. That is Impact. It’s been a great journey so far, and it’s just getting started.”
The team were also WWE Women’s Tag champions during their run in the promotion. The IIconics won the titles in a fatal four-way match at WrestleMania 35. Now they are one of the few teams who can say they’ve held women’s tag team gold in two major promotions.
