Konnan is the head creative mind for Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. He’s been a busy man lately, as Kenny Omega had to relinquish the company’s Mega Championship and a replacement match had to be thrown together to crown a new champion. Now, we know just how ambitious Konnan’s plans for the big show became.
Oliver Taylor from PW Insider reported that Konnan said on his podcast that he tried to book Junior dos Santos for a storyline feud in the company with former UFC rival Cain Velasquez starting at TripleMania Regia on December 4. ESPN’s Mark Raimondi confirmed the rumors in a Twitter response.
“I had heard this, too. The pitch was to fly dos Santos and Dan Lambert down to Mexico and JDS would have started a storyline in AAA with his old UFC rival Cain Velasquez. Would have been fun, but dos Santos couldn’t do it”
Junior dos Santos beat Cain Velasquez for the UFC Heavyweight title back in 2011. Cain returned the favor, beating dos Santos for the championship the following year. In their third and final UFC battle, Velasquez beat dos Santos for a second time.
All Elite Wrestling gave dos Santos the platform for his pro wrestling debut. His first match came on the October 15 episode of Rampage, where he teamed with Men of the Year to take on The Inner Circle. He also participated in a Minneapolis Street Fight with many of the same players at the Full Gear pay-per-view.
Junior dos Santos was released by UFC in March of 2021. Velasquez has more experience in pro wrestling, having appeared for AAA in 2019, WWE between then and 2020, and now returning to the Mexican promotion. He retired from MMA in October of 2019.
