Eddie Kingston has said that his upcoming match at AEW Full Gear with CM Punk is the most personal of his career. While some fans have scoffed at his remarks about his history with the Second City Saint as simple kayfabe storytelling, a wrestler with first-hand experience has confirmed that the two did once have serious backstage heat. When the two were working in IWA Mid-South early in their careers, Punk allegedly fat shamed Kingston and insulted his in-ring work.

Rumors of the incident are well-documented. Now, a wrestler whose name was not revealed, has shared his account of the confrontation with the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. They say that Punk’s non-stop abuse led to years of bitterness from The Mad King.

“A wrestler/subscriber noted to us after watching the Kingston-Punk segment on Rampage, “I can fully vouch for Eddie’s promo on Punk the other night. I was sitting right there in an IWA Mid South locker room when Punk called Eddie and his partner at the time, Blackjack Marciano, fat, lazy and unsafe. Marciano had just accidentally injured Delirious in a previous match and Punk was hot about it, so just buried them nonstop. I could see why Eddie hung onto that hate and anger for so long.”

A lot of years have passed, but constantly hearing words like the ones Punk allegedly spoke would stick with anybody. If he did say those things about Kingston, it’s completely understandable that he might still harbor some feelings about it. Punk has changed a lot since then. Whether or not it’s been patched up, the two have to work together in a huge pay-per-view match.

The anger was apparent in Kingston’s voice during his recent in-ring promo with Punk. After his recent essay about the struggles he’s faced in his career, Kingston is now faced with an opportunity to exorcise those demons. The best thing he can do is have a killer match with Punk and prove him wrong.

AEW Full Gear airs on traditional PPV and the Bleacher Report app on Saturday night from Minneapolis. Punk and Kingston will finally get to settle their feud in the ring. This one will have a little bit more behind it than the usual grudge match.
