Lio Rush signed with All Elite Wrestling at the end of September. Rush had previously retired from the ring to spend time with his family after the pandemic hit. He decided to return to wrestling shortly thereafter. Today, Rush announced that his grandmother passed away of a heart attack.
Rush said that he still plans to make his AEW in-ring debut on tonight’s Dynamite. He is going to dedicate the match to her memory. Rush tweeted that she was looking forward to watching him wrestle on television again, and that he knows she’ll be watching tonight.
“Just got some rough news that my grandmother has sadly passed from a heart attack. We talked about how she looked forward to seeing me wrestle on TV again. Tomorrow I’ll be making my @AEW debut without my grandmother. But i know she will still be watching. This is for you.”
The former WWE Cruiserweight Champion brought a lot of talent to AEW. He has wrestled in New Japan, AAA, CZW, and independent organizations all over. He was released from his WWE contract at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in April of 2020.
Lio Rush also has a music career. Over the years, he’s released several singles and even music videos. Now, his focus will be on putting together the best match he can to honor his late grandmother.
Lio is scheduled to team with Dante Martin to take on Lee Moriarty and Matt Sydal on tonight’s Dynamite. Given the talent involved, the match has the potential to be a show-stealer. Tonight, Lio Rush will be wrestling with a higher purpose.
Our thoughts go out to Lio Rush and his family during this difficult time.
