While some wrestlers unexpectedly lost their jobs in the recent wave of talent releases by WWE, others got exactly what they wanted. There were over a dozen wrestlers let go by the company in one fell swoop. At least three former superstars asked for their releases in advance of the massive layoffs.
On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed which wrestlers were among those who asked for their releases. Zayda Ramier, Lince Dorado, and Gran Metalik all asked for their releases. The wrestlers weren’t granted their release requests, but were included in the cuts since the company was doing them anyway.
“Zayda Ramier, I think she left on her on, didn’t she leave on her own? I think that was her choice, because they weren’t doing anything with her anyway. There were a couple of people, Lince Dorado and Gran Metalik who asked for their release, and I think she did as well. I’m not sure of her, but I know about the other two. They weren’t granted their release, but since they were doing cuts they released them.”
Ramier was discovered by Booker T at a Reality of Wrestling training camp. Her time in NXT was unremarkable, but she has experience against a litany of high-profile women’s wrestlers on the independent circuit. She will be an interesting talent for other promotions to take a look at.
Gran Metalik and Lince Dorado were teamed up as part of Lucha House Party with the also recently-departed Kalisto. Both Metalik and Dorado have held the WWE 24/7 championship. They will likely wind up in a national promotion somewhere.
The sweeping releases shocked the wrestling world. They came shortly after Ring of Honor released their entire roster. A lot of free agents in the pro wrestling business are out there facing uncertainty and trying to find a soft spot to land. By asking for their releases, it appears these three wrestlers are betting on themselves.
