AEW wrestler Orange Cassidy recently shed light on his in-ring character and discussed how his wrestling persona has managed to resonate with the pro wrestling crowd.
In an interview with Lehigh Valley Live, the 37-year-old said he never gave a thought to whether his character would grow on the audience and that it just felt right to adopt persona of an aloof and laid-back slacker.
“I never expected anything. I just did what I felt was the thing to do,” said the former Ironman Heavymetalweight Champion. He continued: “If they liked it, they liked it; if they didn’t, they didn’t.”
Cassidy also spoke about the way he works the crowd during matches as well as his approach to dealing with critics and naysayers. He has a simple solution to the negative feedback he gets: “I don’t read it. Problem solved.”
“Doing what I want to do and wrestling the way I want to wrestle, it was tough. Every single time I would step foot in a wrestling ring, someone would audibly say in the crowd, ‘What is happening?’ That happened a lot.”
He added that he knows people have a mixed feeling towards his wrestling persona and the way he carries the Orange Cassidy act, but that hasn’t prompted him to tweak his character.
