Matt Cardona and deathmatch legend Nick Gage found themselves in a feud a few months ago. Many fans believed Cardona didn’t have what it takes to face off against Nick Gage. It seems GCW’s owner now hopes fans don’t throw sharp objects at wrestlers anymore.
At GCW Homecoming Night 1, Matt Cardona challenged Nick Gage for the GCW World Championship. In a move that no one saw coming, Matt Cardona defeated Nick Gage for the GCW World Championship after an all-out war with the veteran.
The crowd erupted at Cardona’s shocking title win and proceeded to throw a lot of things to the ring as Cardona had a lot of heat on him. Matt Cardona previously revealed that he was genuinely concerned after having a pizza cutter thrown at him.
While speaking on The Wrestling Inc. Daily, GCW owner Brett Lauderdale talked about fans throwing numerous objects at Matt Cardona at GCW Homecoming. Lauderdale stated that he trusts fans not to throw sharp objects at wrestlers after the Matt Cardona incident.
“Surely we don’t want to see anybody get hurt, but it was a very authentic reaction. And I think, as far as I’m concerned, I almost look at that reaction as the ultimate show of respect. Maybe I’m crazy here, but you’re saying throwing pizza cutters. I think there was maybe one. We’re talking about plastic water bottles and the such. These are things that, I guess, if you were to get hit right in the face, it would probably hurt, but otherwise, it’s not going to do a lot of damage.
But to get people to care enough to do that and then for people to care enough to do that, it says something about the performer and the performance. There’s a lot of ways people can react when something they ‘don’t like’ happens, but to get them invested enough to react in that way, like I said, I think it’s almost the ultimate show of respect. Throwing sharp objects is not encouraged, but other than that, I think we kind of trust our fans to react authentically with some common sense involved.”
Matt Cardona recently got back his Internet Title after beating Effy with Chelsea Green’s help. It remains to be seen what is next in store for Cardona. We also hope fans no longer throw sharp objects at wrestlers during GCW shows.
