Former ECW World Champion and ECW Tag Team Champion Sabu made a name for himself as one of the innovators of violence in ECW in the early ’90s. He continued to wrestle for several years until recently. Now it seems his career has come to an end.
Sabu’s body has suffered a lot of wear and tear over the years, especially due to all the abuse he put himself through in the violent matches. At 57 years of age, it seems time has finally caught up to Sabu.
While speaking to Wrestling Shoot Interviews, Sabu revealed that his body couldn’t hold up during a match a couple of weeks ago. Sabu stated that he hurt his back a year ago and it still hurts him. Due to this, he has decided to officially retire from in-ring competition.
”I’m not doing real good. I hurt my back about a year ago and it’s still been hurting. I wrestled a couple of weeks ago but I shouldn’t have. I’ve only wrestled like twice in the last year [and] I only went to the gym a couple of times the last year ’cause I hurt my back. I’m probably not gonna wrestle no more… I’m probably just gonna do autograph signings and personal appearance-type stuff.”
2021 has not been a good year for Sabu at all. On top of him retiring as an active wrestler, Sabu also lost ‘Super Genie’ Melissa Coates earlier this year. Coates was her valet and instrumental to Sabu’s success. We will have to wait and see what is next in store for Sabu.
