Last Friday on WWE SmackDown, Drew McIntyre put out an open challenge. The call was answered by Mustafa Ali, who has been looking to elevate his status in the promotion. The way McIntyre defeated Ali may offer some foreshadowing about a future big match.

Dave Meltzer reported in a Wrestling Observer update that the finish had “significance” to it. Drew made Mustafa submit to a Kimura lock. That is one of Brock’s signature moves. Where there’s smoke, there could be fire.

“There was significance in Drew McIntyre using the Kimura (Brock Lesnar’s submission move) on Mustafa Ali on Smackdown.”

McIntyre previously won the WWE title from Lesnar at WrestleMania 36. The show memorably took place at the WWE Performance Center. McIntyre has recently publicly stated that he wants another shot at Brock, this time with fans in the house.

The setup is there for a program between Lesnar and McIntyre. They’ve got a history that includes a world title match at WrestleMania. A lot of fans were disappointed that Drew didn’t get his big moment in front of a live crowd.

Drew McIntyre’s reign as WWE champion came at the most inopportune time. With fans locked out and WWE doing shows with no crowds, it was hard to gauge Drew’s momentum as champ. McIntyre lost the title to The Miz when Miz cashed in his Money In The Bank contract at Elimination Chamber.
