Cody Rhodes is the EVP of AEW and has remained a babyface in the company since the very beginning. Rhodes‘ is one of the top stars in the company, as he has competed in several memorable matches and praise-worthy segments over the years. Rhodes continues to get polarizing reactions no matter what he does as well.

AEW held their highly anticipated Grand Slam event last month and Arthur Ashe Stadium was certainly a night to remember for fans and pro wrestlers alike. It also saw the return of Brandi Rhodes to AEW television.

Cody Rhodes’ first match in well over a month saw him face off against Malakai Black. While Cody Rhodes was the babyface, he received a lot of boos from the crowd in New York City as fans simply didn’t want to have anything to do with him.

This continued for his third match against Malakai Black, where he ended up winning. Cody Rhodes continued to get a lot of boos. Despite that, Rhodes has remained a face.

While speaking on AdFreeShows, Tony Schiavone was asked why Cody Rhodes gets such polarizing reactions from the fans and why some fans simply don’t like him. Schiavone explained why fans don’t necessarily like Rhodes now.

“Cody has a reality show and gets his own special entrance. I understand he’s getting booed, but he gets cheered a lot too. I’m in the arena so I can hear it and see it much more than you guys can. I think he got cheered as much as he got booed in Orlando, it’s just the people who boo are much louder and more obnoxious.

When Justin Roberts started calling him ‘The Prince of Wrestling,’ that stuck in people’s craw. He started winning matches. Obviously, he’s an EVP so everybody thinks he gets preferential treatment; that’s not true. I mean, he lost the first two matches to Malakai Black, so he hasn’t won all matches. He lost to Brodie (Lee). It’s not that he wins every match. Some people just don’t like him. I happen to like him because I like his family.”

Cody Rhodes previously made it clear that he will retire before turning heel in AEW. He also compared himself to Woody from Toy Story in a very bizarre way. Now it remains to be seen if Cody Rhodes truly will remain a face for his entire career or finally become a heel or not.
