Jon Moxley loved pro wrestling when he was growing up. Mox is still living his dream, but he has also learned a lot about the pro wrestling business over the years.
The former AEW World Champion said that growing up he was convinced The Undertaker was a mystical character, adding that he and his friends would frequently discuss the character’s persona during their childhood days.
Moxley appeared on the “Throwing Down” podcast to promote his new book, “Mox,” which is slated for release on November 2. He was interviewed by his wife, former WWE commentator Renee Paquette, and MMA fighter Miesha Tate.
The 35-year-old talked about his childhood obsession with wrestling that grew to the point he became a pro wrestler. He said he and his friends really bought into The Undertaker’s gimmick when they were kids.
“It’s like this mysterious world. A guy like The Undertaker, I remember me and my friends would be like, ‘Do you really think he sleeps in a coffin? What does he do in real life,’ because it wasn’t exposed like it is today. So it was like this mysterious world.”
Moxley added he found himself invested in wrestling at an early age. He said he joined pro wrestling through an indie show at a local flea market called Red Barn Flea Market in Cincinnati.
“I saw a flyer on a telephone pole for a local, little indie show. I was like, ‘Oh man, I’m going to that.’ It was a flea market, called the Red Barn Flea Market in Cincinnati. I went to it, and in the event hand-stapled together program, where they have coupons for pizza and stuff like that, they list the sponsors and the card tonight.
“There was an ad in the back for Les Thatcher’s Main Event Pro Wrestling Camp. That was the lightbulb moment. It’s like anything else. You want to be a doctor, you go to medical school. You want to be a wrestler, you go to wrestling school.”
He also elaborated on his approach to writing the book, saying he did not want the scope of his autobiography to be limited to hardcore wrestling fans. “I wrote it with the idea of not playing down to them or over-explaining anything. But also, I thought it was a cooler way to make it accessible and fun for a non-wrestling fan,” he said.
Moxley recently retained his Game Changer Wrestling (GCW) World Championship against former champion and longtime rival Nick Gage at the promotion’s “Fight Club” PPV. Check out the full match below:
