Cody Rhodes is the EVP of AEW and has remained a babyface in the company since the very beginning. Rhodes‘ is one of the top stars in the company, as he has competed in several memorable matches and praise-worthy segments over the years.
AEW held their highly anticipated Grand Slam event last month and Arthur Ashe Stadium was certainly a night to remember for fans and pro wrestlers alike. It also saw the return of Brandi Rhodes to AEW television. Cody Rhodes’ first match in well over a month saw him face off against Malakai Black. It saw him getting booed unanimously by fans despite the fact that he was the babyface.
Before making his way to AEW, Cody Rhodes honed his craft in the independent circuit after getting released by WWE. He developed his ‘American Nightmare’ persona in various promotions such as NJPW and others.
While speaking on the In The Kliq podcast, Cody Rhodes talked about his days competing in the independent circuit after his WWE release. Cody Rhodes made it clear that he doesn’t want to be stuck in a bubble. He also is well aware of Jacob Fatu in MLW.
“The number one thing I learned, other than to reconnect with the fans and get the love from them that I had I needed at the time, the number one thing I learned is not to be in a bubble. For a decade I had been in the bubble of WWE and then the fact that AEW was able to happen proves that there were things far outside the bubble, there might even have been a bigger bubble. But even with that, ‘Okay, I can’t get into a bubble in New Japan. I can’t get into a bubble in IMPACT. I can’t get into a bubble in Ring of Honor.’ All great places, but wrestling has to be for everybody, It really does. It has to represent everybody. That’s the number one thing is not to just be this single company individually bubbled up basically unaware of what’s out there. Prime example, I’m aware of Jacob Fatu at MLW. I’m aware of these things that are happening in our industry and I think everyone from top to the bottom, Tony Khan at the top, is aware of what’s out there and how perhaps we can connect to it.”
Cody Rhodes is set to be a part of a Luchador tag team called‘Too Fast, Too Fuego.’ The two are set to be in action on Dark: Elevation which will be tapped on the upcoming Sunday. He is also scheduled to square off against Malakai Black for the third time on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite. We will have to wait and see if Rhodes will lose again or not.
