Tony Khan has been on a media blitz to promote All Elite Wrestling. Khan recently took shots at WWE on podcasts, television, radio, and the internet. During his most recent interview, the AEW owner announced a new special AEW program.
Khan spoke with Busted Open Radio’s Fight Nation this morning. On the show, Tony talked about different things AEW is trying to do to draw an audience. This week’s special Saturday Dynamite will include a college football themed twist.
“It is an AEW/college football show. And it’ll be a preview show. We’ll do some kind of a countdown to the live Dynamite on Saturday… Just trying to do something different this weekend.”
This isn’t the first time AEW has tried to appeal to crossover fans from other sports. The company ran an MMA-themed match in the past. Professional boxers Anthony Ogogo and “Iron” Mike Tyson have also appeared for AEW. There is also a major ongoing storyline with several MMA fighters involved, including an in-ring match with Junior dos Santos.
The college football theme seems like a pretty good fit for an AEW pregame show. Jake Hager played defensive tackle for the currently undefeated Oklahoma Sooners. Jim Ross is royalty at Oklahoma games. Jaguars coach Urban Meyer made a cameo for AEW. He won national titles at Clemson. Dr. Britt Baker is a Penn State alum and a huge Nittany Lions fan.
Khan hasn’t announced where the countdown show will air. It may be a YouTube exclusive like last Friday’s Rampage. There’s also a chance that TNT will allow them to air the special.
