Kenny Omega retained the AAA Mega Championship at TripleMania, and that was AEW’s call. AEW didn’t want Omega losing two nights in a row after his defeat on AEW Rampage to Christian Cage. That was the plan, but he offered to switch things up once he discovered the Nature Boy was involved.
Flair did AAA a real solid by showing up free of charge so he could be alongside Andrade. Charlotte Flair also made the trip, but she couldn’t appear on camera. She missed a WWE house show that the company continued promoting her for in the process.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that Kenny Omega offered to lose the Mega Championship to Andrade once he found out Flair was involved. Tony Khan apparently came around on the idea as well, but AAA decided to follow through with things as planned.
“I know Omega didn’t know, and when he got there and found out Flair was gonna be there — which was the first he knew — he was like, ‘we should change the championship.’ You know, Ric Flair getting him involved, that would be a great story. That would be a great story. That was kinda pitched and Tony Khan was fine with Omega losing at that point, but Dorian Roldan made the call that he wanted Omega to win, because the they next championship match — whatever it is — it may be Omega and Psycho Clown, but I’m not sure [it was already booked’.”
We’ll have to see if Ric Flair ends up in AEW sooner than later alongside Andrade El Idolo. They certainly made a great pairing at TripleMania and The Nature Boy’s WWE release contained zero non-compete clause as well. This could be a very interesting time for the two-time WWE Hall of Famer.
