Rey Mysterio has the Greatest Mask of all Time according to his merchandise. It seems that Kalisto was game to take it, but they never made that match happen. This is one regret he still has.
Kalisto was released from WWE and fans are awaiting his next move. Now he can speak openly about his time with Vince McMahon’s company. A lot of things need to happen before a huge stipulation like mask vs mask can be arranged, but Vince McMahon obviously wasn’t interested.
While speaking to Insight With Chris Van Vliet, the former Lucha House Party member revealed that he pitched a mask vs mask concept for a match, but McMahon nixed it.
My biggest regret is not pitching my idea to Vince. Pretty much the whole world knew except for Vince. [I wanted to do] a mask vs. mask match against Rey Mysterio. I had Rey’s blessing, Dominik’s blessing, everyone. They all loved it. I showed it to Paul Heyman too. Paul said ‘This is genius, do it.’ I was like let’s do this! It’s just such a good story, it’s my biggest regret not talking to Vince about it. Right before I was going to, I got released.”
“I was prepared for anything, I had such a great story that nobody would have expected. So for Paul Heyman to say that’s genius, I got something. The writers, everyone loved it. I even showed it to Daniel Bryan and Edge, they loved it. But it’s my own fault. I should have gone [to Vince].”
That mask vs mask match would have been interesting, but it also would have likely resulted in Kalisto losing his mask. There’s a very small chance that WWE would want to lose all the merchandising possibilities due to losing Mysterio’s famous symbol.
