Buddy Murphy fell victim to losing his first name, and many fans blamed it on another Vince McMahon decision. It turns out that fans have been blaming the wrong person for that switch-up. There was also a real reason for his name change, but that was never explained as WWE totally ignored it in the storyline.
After his WWE release, Murphy will have to pick a new name now. While we wait to see what his next move is, he has plenty of WWE tea to spill.
While speaking to Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Buddy Murphy told all about that name change in WWE. Shortening his name was actually an idea that he came up with himself. That was obviously approved by Vince McMahon later on, but it stemmed from his program with Seth Rollins’ Messiah character.
“We’re doing this Disciple character, right? And Buddy Murphy the Disciple didn’t quite fit. So, I said ‘how about I sacrifice my given name for the greater good?’ So, now I’m becoming a reborn to Seth. Your parents give you your name, but I’m sacrificing it and now I will be known as this, like a number, right? For the greater cause, and they’re like, ‘Okay,’ and next week I’m just Murphy — never explained!”
WWE could have really made something cool out of Murphy giving up his first name for Rollins, but that didn’t happen. Instead, they just changed his name and made fans figure it out. Obviously, they missed the entire point of the subtext, because it was never explained.
