Bret Hart appeared during AEW Double or Nothing to introduce the AEW World Title. That stood as a big moment for AEW, but it didn’t mark the beginning of more time for the Hitman in AEW. He has not appeared for the company since then.
Hart was at Starrcast, the fan convention happening around the same time as Double or Nothing. Since he was around, they asked him to take part in that segment. It didn’t mean anything more than Hart making an appearance, but fans read into a lot more.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained that Bret Hart’s Double or Nothing appearance was a last minute decision. He actually would have stuck around AEW a little while longer, but he worries about Natalya because she is still in WWE.
“It was a last-minute thing. They asked him to present the title and said ‘sure’. He knew he would get heat with Vince, but you know Bret. He didn’t have a contract saying he couldn’t do it, and he didn’t worry that much about getting heat from Vince. So, he worries to a degree, because Nattie [Natalya] is still there and you don’t want them to take out reprisals against her.”
Vince McMahon has treated Natalya very well in recent memory as 1/2 of the Women’s Tag Team Champions, but she hasn’t always been featured in a top spot on the women’s roster. The idea that McMahon might take a little retribution out on Natalya is not unheard of, especially if her Uncle Bret inked a deal with the competition.
